Job Title: Grade Superintendent
Division: Construction
Job Summary
Plan, schedule, coordinate, and supervise grading operations for construction projects. Responsible for overseeing crews performing excavation, grading, and earthwork activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and timelines.
Duties and Responsibilities
Visualize, fulfill, and implement the company vision and core values.
Plan and supervise grading activities including: determining methods, manpower levels, material quantities, equipment needs, and work schedules.
Coordinate grading work with other trades, departments, and subcontractors to maintain project flow.
Ensure work complies with drawings, specifications, and schedules; maintain liaison with engineering and planning teams.
Resolve grading-related issues such as soil conditions, compaction challenges, and productivity concerns.
Monitor compliance with safety and environmental requirements; document and implement corrective measures as needed.
Maintain communication with other departments (Material Control, Purchasing, Quality Control) to ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.
Maintain insurable driving record and ensure a safe work environment at all times.
Education and/or Experience
Four-year engineering degree or equivalent technical training and/or experience.
Minimum of eight years supervisory experience in grading and earthwork operations, including familiarity with construction methods, equipment, and procedures.
Qualifications
Advanced understanding of grading techniques, soil stabilization, and earthwork scheduling.
Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple crews effectively.
Proficient in reading and interpreting civil plans and grade specifications.
Experience with GPS-controlled grading equipment preferred.
Physical Demands
Sitting: 30% of time
Standing: 70% of time
Weight Lifted: Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds; occasional overhead lifting.
Physical Movement: Walking on uneven terrain, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and operating heavy equipment as needed.
Working Conditions: Majority of time outdoors in varying weather; long and irregular hours during peak season.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to use iPad, cell phone, and company radio for work instructions.
Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.
Familiarity with grading software and GPS systems.
